• Another great story that kept my 10yr old reading until the end! He started reading these in 3rd grade and now is in 4th and just loves them. Any time another book comes out I buy it, he reads it in about 2 days and then I add it to my classroom collection for my 3rd graders. I recommend this series to anyone with a child that loves realistic fiction/adventure and needs to keep them wanting to read! Great for 8-11 yrs.
• Great book, but it came damaged. Pretty disappointed since I paid for a new copy.

• Got it for a gift. I’ll read it after the recipient.
• Ron Rapoport has written a brilliant biography of an important man, Ernie Banks. Rapoport captures the essence of Mr. Cub, a complicated, self-made star who touched a generation of baseball fans.
• Pleasant read.
• Until the Braves moved to Milwaukee, the Cubs were "my" team and Ernie Banks was my hero. I kept all of his stats and is some way he helped instill in me a deep commitment to Civil Rights.
  
  "I kept my mouth shut but tried to make a difference. My whole life, I've just wanted to make people better".
  
  Later I went to Mississippi to do legal work in behalf of the movement, and some of my associates felt he should have been more outspoken. I disagreed -- he led for me by quiet example.
  
  These words capture a great deal about the man that I admired, not only as a Cubbie, but as a man
  
  "My philosophy about race relations is that I'm the man and I'll set my own patterns in life. I don't rely on anyone else's opinions. I look at a man as a human being; I don't care about his color. Some people feel that because you are black you will never be treated fairly, and that you should voice your opinions, be militant about them. I don't feel this way. You can't convince a fool against his will ... If a man doesn't like me because I'm black, that's fine. I'll just go elsewhere, but I'm not going to let him change my life."
  
  This well written, deeply researched book is a real pleasure to read. It brought back many memories, and it taught me a great deal about a boyhood hero -- a hero even now that I am 82.

• Ernie Banks had an oddly-timed career and was an unlikely success. He didn't start playing ball until his mid-teens, had very little formal instruction, spent a bit of time playing for the dying Negro Leagues, and then found himself -- boom! -- in 1953, one of the first generation of black major leaguers. Thus, we have someone with exceptional athletic abilities who was a sponge (he learned while doing.) And he was green! And rural! (He spent a year picking cotton instead of going to school.)
  
  Rapoport does a brilliant job explaining why Banks naturally became the ideal "company man" for the Cubs franchise -- a talent for the ages, yes, but also an unflagging booster, devoted to the idea of team, ever-smiling and never-problematic. Not exactly a superstar for the 1960's and 70's.
  
  The prose here is lean. The research is sold. We get it all the glory years as a dominant shortstop who hit for power, the rise and fall of the late 1960's Cubs, his transition into glad-handing ex-player, his troubled personal relationships, and, yes, his disappointments and bitterness and personal weaknesses. It is shame that Banks didn't live long into old age. He would have been a compelling elder statesman whose ideas about color and fame and achievement and business could have creeped out a bit in his later years.
• Maybe the years have rolled by and nowadays there might be many who don’t know who said those words and the impact they had on baseball and the nation. To me, they epitomized the character of a fantastic ballplayer, one I thoroughly enjoyed as I spent my youth in the suburbs of Chicago. I still remember my father telling me that even if the rest of the team wasn’t hitting, you could count on Ernie Banks regularly swatting balls out of the park.
  
  Author Ron Rapoport hits a grand slam with his book on Ernie. “Let’s Play Two” is a revealing look at not only a talented athlete, but the man who quietly gave so many years to the Chicago Cubs, a team that spent most of his career out of contention. The book is amazing, and the extensive list of sources – interviews and publications -- explains why.
  
  Along the way, Mr. Rapoport fleshes out the story in many directions. Ernie Banks was brought to the Cubs in the early days when most players were white and fans were still not used to black players on the roster. The author does not shy away from the racism, and recounts numerous stories that are hard to believe 55-65 years later. Players like Banks quietly took the abuse and internalized it.
  
  The glory and the pain of 1969 is relived, bringing back the memories that evince flashes of a rollercoaster ride that climbed to such heights and then swiftly rocketed back down to the bottom. While we see Ernie on this trip, there are plenty of moments that help us to understand the make-up of Cubs roster as well as the rest of the league.
  
  Overall, an informative book that provides plenty of backdrop to help explain the central character. Ernie Banks was a hometown hero and the player that every team in the league wanted to have. Mr. Rapoport artfully explains this in what is probably the best sports biography I have ever read. Five stars.

• Although I am not a Cubs fan, I can't resist a good baseball bio. Ron Rappoprt gives us a great story in Let's Play Two The Legend of Mr. Cub, the Life of Ernie Banks. Banks grew up in Texas and seemed to fall almost accidentally into baseball as a profession. In fact, his whole life seems rather passive, letting things happen and seeming not to mind when they go badly. On the surface, he seemed like the epitome of an easy going guy who went with the flow. But after a while, you realize he was angry. It's a surprise because Banks never displayed his angry side to the public, but it's also not a surprise, because he had to put up with a lot and it would make anyone angry. In addition to learning about Banks the man and the baseball player, there's plenty of interesting background about the evolution of baseball in the second half of the 20th century and life in Chicago and on the road for a Major Leaguer.

• I didn’t really laugh or find the story all that funny. There were some highly enjoyable moments and some parts that dragged. Emotional connection with the characters is a huge part of reading for me and I didn’t feel all that invested. Parts of my lack of investment lead me to not be overly thrilled or devastated when the plot shifted. Overall, it was a good read, but nothing that suited what I was looking for at the moment.
• Sophia Money-Coutts has written the best book I've read this year. Beautiful writing style, super realistic scenes, truly felt emotions, I couldn't ask for more! Be prepared to look up British slang, it's so wonderfully different! I'm feeling fairly fluent in British English now! Please read this book, you won't regret it!
• I totally skipped from Chapter 8 to the epilogue . Just too slow moving for me. Polly is just not interesting to me and her problems are largely self-made, except for her mother. At 35% I stopped and jumped forward to see if I was right about the ending.
• I enjoy British lit so when I saw a review for this book I ordered it right away...and I'm so glad I did! It was a fun read and I stayed up way past my bedtime reading because I was so caught up in the stories of the characters. Definitely recommend the book and can't wait for Money-Coutts next book!

  Gah! Once more “women's fiction”, and as usual I have to have a quick moan – why do we do this – cut off potential readers? Who says men won't/don't read romance, they certainly write it, so why exclude them this way?
  
  So, the book. A debut novel and one that's really well written, and I loved the dry humour, and the realness of it.
  Loved Polly and her friends, her job at the magazine, very typically British Tatler style ;-) Poor Polly is approaching 30 though and feels that her time is running out, she wants a husband and family, but fears she's destined to be the mothball scented, elderly, maiden aunt...especially now her bestie is getting married and she's Matron of Honour and doesn't have a Plus One.
  I loved her relationship with her mum, and her support when her mum gets ill, the fears they both have that anyone who's been ill can understand.
  
  Its a fun read, made me smile in parts, sad in others and very very typically British. As a Brit I love that, we seem to have a slightly different sense of humour and the more subtle approach as here worked so well for me.
  Sadly the about turn at the end didn't work for me, I didn't feel it was real, hadn't got a sense of it coming throughout the novel, and TBH really let it down for me. With a different ending, the one that I kind of felt had been building I'd have given this a five, but as it is that change really let the story down IMO. Not the resolution I wanted -( I felt kind of unsatisfied, and cheated of what I'd expected it to be. Surprises are good, this one was just too much of a shock, IMO, and didn't gel with the rest of the story.
  
  Stars Three and a half, a terrific book right up to that turnaround at the end!

• 3.5 rounded UP because the whole novel was great fun to read.
  This really was a perfect summer read to 'put your feet up and relax'. The Plus One has a high Bridget Jones vibe although Polly is a much cooler and fun person than Bridget and she's certainly not as clumsy and insecure, so I think I actually like her a whole lot more!
  
  She doesn't have the most interesting job at a magazine called Posh! but I must say it did make for some very entertaining reading. Her job includes writing articles about the new IT-dog (because the rich have an obsession for horses, and dogs come a close second), finding baby scans so they know who the little ones can become friends with when born, to being sent to places she'd normally never go for the best scoop... like interviewing the new singleton marquess at his parent's castle, or attending 'special and top secret' parties frequented by people of the high classes.
  
  The Plus One isn't full of fairytales... although now that I think of it, the book does include a castle, a sheikh, a gold bath, bidet and loo seat... but at least in the bedroom department, when it comes down to it, it was hilarious and brutally honest -). The many struggles and thoughts flashing through Polly's head were super funny and made me snort OUT LOUD. Yep, damn this book.
  
  I think you get the idea what type of novel it is -). If you read this you're bound to get along with and root for Polly. Now there is a very serious health issue in this novel as well which makes it sometimes a bit more serious but overall this is just a fun chicklit novel that will transport you to a whole other world. I came to realise that even the rich and famous don't have the perfect lives and you can find sleazebags in every layer of society -). I was a fan of the colorful cast in the novel, her gay roommate Joe, best friend Lex, colleagues Lala and Legs, old friend Bill, but I would have liked to see their own lives more in detail too and missed a bit more intrigue and drama perhaps. The ending left me completely satisfied though, I saw what was coming but was very happy the way it ended.
• The Plus One by Sophia Money-Coutts a four-star read that will fizzle. I like a good girlie read, the drama and funnies, and this one on the surface does all that, but it does miss some pop. Polly made me chuckle at several different points in the story, but then she also made me rolls my eyes. I feel like if you are single you will love this book as Polly will make you chuckle at things you do yourself and make you realise dating is hard and you do need to laugh at life at times. Polly was good but the rest of the characters were just as much a part of the story and they each played their own part telling their story, some I liked more than others. I will admit reading Polly interact with her mum, made me give mine a call and make sure she knows how much I love her. If you are after a great summer read this is the one for you.

• Dang I hate to be the first non-5 star review but I’ve got to be honest. The book is great, don’t get me wrong. My wife and I are blessed with an already very strong marriage and I thank God for that but we bought this book after the XO marriage conference, having really enjoyed listening to Dave and Ashley speak there. The book has some great points, advice and ideas. I do recommend it for all Christian couples, especially those who may be struggling in their marriage. My reason for the three stars is the podcast. We listen to the podcast while simultaneously reading the book. Unfortunately, the content is much of the same. I’ve heard several of their stories multiple times after the conference, the podcast, and the book. Now some of them are great stories that I don’t mind listening to multiple times but I wish there was more different content between the mediums. My advice would be to either read the book or listen to the podcast but not both. You’ll get a lot of repeat content.
• This husband & wife coauthored book is about practical & refreshing ways to make your marriage better. Written for individual couples, it also has the bonus of coming with a complete 10 week discussion guide for small groups. The questions in the guide help tremendously in the application of the book content. There are also bonus videos included. The Naked Marriage covers more than marital sex. It is about the emotional & spiritual aspects of marriage as well.
  This couple very openly reveals in both serious and light hearted ways, how to break through to the next level of intimacy in these areas. This book is a GREAT read for any married couple who desires to learn more about God's plan for marriage. I will be recommending it for my marriage coaching clients as well as giving it away for gifts.
• My wife and I went to the XO marriage confess and fell in love with the two of them. Even though I thought that we were doing good in our marriage there were so many great tips and thought-provoking questions that started some very deep and healing conversations that seemed to before always raised hurt feelings. It wasn't until we were both "naked" with one another that the healing could happen. This book not only helped our marriage but has inspired me to start a small group in our church that will last 12 weeks. I know that this book will not only help our marriage but will help others.
• I bought this book for my husband, but actually we ended up reading it together. It is such a great book!! It is very easy to read and has so may practical things in it to apply to your marriage. We have been married almost 23 yrs. & so many things in the book just spoke volumes to us. It has some funny parts & parts where you just don't want to put it down. The authors also have their own fb pages, but also a page together called marriage. On these different pages they do videos that are great to listen to as well.
• This book has really helped verbalize a lot of what me and my husband have felt. Highly recommend
