NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The startling inside story of Donald Trump’s first two years in Washington as viewed from Capitol Hill, where lawmakers on both sides of the aisle jockeyed for advantage as American politics reached a fevered pitch.

Taking readers into secret strategy calls and closed-door meetings from the House to the White House, Politico Playbook writers Jake Sherman and Anna Palmer trace the gamesmanship and the impulsiveness, the dealmaking and the backstabbing, in a blow-by-blow account of the power struggle that roiled Congress. Moving from the fights for advantage between Donald Trump, Nancy Pelosi, and Chuck Schumer; to Mitch McConnell’s merciless, Machiavellian handling of the sexual assault accusations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh; to Paul Ryan’s desperate, failed attempts to keep Mark Meadows from pushing Trump into a government shutdown over immigration, The Hill to Die On bristles with fresh news and tells the story of what really happened in some of the most defining moments our era. Like The West Wing for Congress, or Shattered meets This Town, The Hill to Die On tells an unforgettable story of politics and power, where the stakes going forward are nothing less than the future of America and the lives of millions of ordinary Americans.

The Hill to Die On The Battle for Congress and the Future of Trump America eBook Jake Sherman Anna Palmer Reviews

  • If you have ever wanted to be a fly on the wall while political leaders on Capital Hill are making decisions in the Trump era, you should read this book. Another comment suggests that this book is anti-Trump and anti-GOP. I honestly did not reach that conclusion. The book recounts conversations, which may be critical of Trump, but certainly not anti-Trump. For example, recounting how confused legislators were after one meeting where they thought they had an agreement with Trump and then he changed his mind. That is just Trump's personality - or governing style. This was just a really interesting book for me to read on the perspectives/insight of the legislators during the Trump years.
  • I downloaded the sample of this book and found it informative, if not somewhat interesting. I glanced through the book at the local book store to try to get a feeling for the overall tone of the book. As a conservative, I got very suspicious. I then read the review of the book in The Guardian (U.S. edition) and finally got the message, this is a book critical of the GOP, President Trump and various republican leaders, past and present. I get enough Anti-Trump on TV and print media, I don't have to get more buying a book intent on making Nancy Pelosi a political and national hero.
  • I noticed one person didn't read the full book but still wrote their negative review claiming this was a Republican hit piece. I read this cover to cover before reviewing as that's the only way to give an honest one.

This book gives a bird eye view of what happened in Congress during the past two years when the Republicans were in power. They claimed they would fix all of America's woes, but then nothing much happened besides a tax cut bill that benefitted corporations while middle-level Americans took the hit.

This is a must read book for those wondering why things take forever to get through (and mostly never do) in our government. It's also a valuable resource to make better choices in who we vote for in every office as each one does matter, not just the president.
  • The authors are the true heirs to White, Germond/Witcover and Halperin/Heilemann in their reporting on how Pelosi retook the House. Masterful in scope, with lots of insider scoop, this is a must-read for anyone who cares about politics.
  • Thoroughly enjoyed reading about the inner workings of our Congress. Fact based. Fascinating.
  • Get this book, read it.
Of all the books written during the Trump presidency this is the best and most important. So much focus is always on 1600 Penn, when the real business is on the hill. This book reads like a novel and places you in the room where it happens, no matter what “it” is. The access achieved by the authors is unparalleled. This is a book that will become required reading at most universities and pol-sci curriculum, it’s just a perfect example of solid, trustworthy and ethical journalism. I can’t recommend this book enough.
  • For the true nerds, a tick-tock about life at the other end of Pennsylvania Ave. If the reality show in the Executive isn’t enough for you, you will enjoy this deep dive into recent history. I mean, I did. But then, I’m a true nerd. I hope most of you have lives that are far richer than the audience for this well-sourced tome.
  • Excellent reporting. Reads like a novel.
